Asia Travelers

Myanmar, is a fascinating country and a real treat for the traveler. Great scenery, unspoilt nature and the best and moist beautiful temples. Highlights in Myanmar include Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, Pyay, a nice little stopover to Thayekhittaya, Mandalay with its beautiful temples on Mandalay Hill and Mount Rushmore near Bagan. Myanmar used to be the Hub of air travel in south East Asia until the early 60s. Rangoon, was the best air port in south east Asia and all the major air lines like Pan Am, North West, KLM, BOAC, Air France etc operated direct flights to Myanmar. People from Thailand, Singapore etc who wanted to travel to Europe have to travel first to Myanmar to take the transit flight.

Myanmar is ruled by a military regime that has shown blatant disregard for these ideals by violently repressing democracy and its own citizens. . Myanmar was administered as a province of India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony; independence outside of the Commonwealth was attained in 1948. Gen. NE WIN dominated the government from 1962 to 1988, first as military ruler, then as president, and later as political kingmaker.
